We on the other hand, own and operate two BGA re-flow stations, an infrared and hot air system driven by computer controlled heat profiles and a reflow owen. Essentially, this is the same equipment that Microsoft™ and Sony™ use to refurbished their failed consoles. This equipment is very expensive, and only few companies in town actually own it. We do not do clamp mods, fan mods, washer mods or towel / heat gun tricks. In fact, we remove any mods done to the system and restore it to OEM like state, where possible.

If unit can not be repaired after a 2^nd consecutive failure within 30 days, a 50% refund is offered. For all repairs we ask customers to provide their own power cord, controller, video cord, and one game that was causing an issue in order to rule out un-necessary repair and software problems.

Xbox Original, First Generation Unit

If you are doing the repair yourself (we stock all Xbox, Playstation and Wii parts), here is how you can determine which DVD drive you have:

(1)   HD DVD - extremely rare, was a competitor to Blue Ray but the technology never took off
(2)   Hitachi GDR-3120L (middle drive in the image below)
(3)   Toshiba/Samsung TS-H943A  (right drive in the image below)
(4)   BENQ VAD6038 (considered the best drive) (left drive, identicall tray to Lite-On)
(5)   Philips Lite-On DG-16D2S (left drive, identical tray as the BENQ VAD drive)

Drives (2) and (3) can be identified by simply looking at the tray in the ejected position.

Drives (4) and (5) have identical trays, and in order to properly ID it, you have to remove the front face plate of your console, and look into the hole on the bottom right of the drive. Inside the hole you will see a wire. If the wire is a gray or dark white your drive model is a BenQ VAD (4). If the wire is yellow or light yellow then the drive is a LiteOn (5). More Technical Info on Xbox360 and Playstation Reflow Repair Process

We can bring your xbox 360 console back to life from any of the fatal errors such as E73, E74 , Red Ring of Death, RROD and similar. First, we disassemble the console and clean it out. We inspect all elements and determine where the failure has occurred.  The Motherboard is placed on the IRD re-flow station, and using computer controlled profiles, slowly brought up to re-flow temperature. Once the bottom of the motherboard reaches proper temperature, which we closely monitor, computer turns on the preheat infrared light and heats the top of the chip to proper temperature. At this point the process is paused with bottom heat still on, and we apply liquid flux (if needed) under the chip, to insure proper re-flow (using a hypodermic injection needle)

After that, the temperature is once again brought up and computer takes over by slowly applying the right amount of heat and infrared light in very specific cycles.

When the process is complete, the system board is gradually cooled down, so the new cold solder joints on the chip can take hold. When the motherboard reaches room temperature it is installed back into your console and run-tested for 24 hours. If you choose to take your equipment elsewhere, please demand to see the actual equipment. This will guarantee that you are getting your money's worth and a proper repair.

Similar process is followed with Sony Playstation as well as failed (overheated) laptop motherboards. The process utilizes a different heat profile for each particular chipset, which we have perfected through research, failure tracking and technical documentation.

How To keep Your Console From Failing Again

Due to apparent design flaws and new EPA lead-free solder requirements, most modern electronics that generate a substantial amount of heat are prone to failure. First and foremost, keep your console or laptop dust, and debris free. Second, allow plenty of room for console to operate. A shelf inside of the entertainment center is perhaps the worst place to locate your console, as there is no where for the heat to go. Invest in an aftermarket cooling system and cooling pads. These range anywhere from 20-40 dollars. You can always purchase one from us after your console is repaired. Remember, heat is your consoles worst enemy!

MetroGamez provides mail in services for all console repair . There are only 3 easy steps:

(1) Download, print, and fill out the repair request form, and give us a call if you have any questions at 586-744-4839. Include the form in your package and describe the issue as well as you can. Details are of outermost importance and will speed up the repair process. Please make sure to sign the form. Please include two phone numbers if possible.

Warranty Information and Important Disclosures

All local repair prices reflect a 3% cash discount. Metrogamez provides a labor only warranty on any repair for the first 30 days following the repair. We are not responsible for warranty repair if damage is caused by shock, improper use, modding or any consoles showing signs of abuse. We record all serial numbers and mark all installed parts to identify if such parts are covered by our warranty. Customer responsible for all warranty shipping fees. We can not warranty any systems where the console / xbox / wii /ds / playstation /  ipod / iphone has been previously opened, tempered with, or modified by the customer, or exposed to moisture, as often times we receive consoles where repairs were attempted using heat gun and similar methods. Those types of attempts are extremely destructive to the GPU, surrounding circuitry as well as other chips containing cold solder joints. In an unlikely event of a recurring failure after 30 days, we will attempt a repair at highly reduced post-warranty rate (usually $25).  Please keep in mind that most consoles fail due to overheating. To minimize the chances of it overheating again, you absolutely MUST obtain an after market cooling system and keep the console dust and debris free.  On an average, we see only 5% of consoles return after 90 days due to the same issue. That's an extremely high success rate for console repair industry. In Contrast, consoles previously repaired and equipped with an after market cooling system return rate averages less than 1%! Keep it cool and your console will not fail.
