Xbox 360 Common Errors & Troubleshooting Steps

Xbox360-ringofdeath-rrod
Microsoft Xbox 360 (tm) is prone to higher than usual rate of failure. After all, it packs an extremely powerfule multi-core processor as well as an advanced Video Graphics Controller that rivals those only found in higher end gaming PC's. When you cram all that power into something no bigger than a phone book, and run it 24/7, excessive heat production, as well as over use and undersized cooling will lead to console damage. Just think of it this way - at full throttle your console consumes up to 140 Watts of power and converts it into almost 140 watts worth of heat. All that thermal energy has to dissipate, but there is nowhere for it to go. That's why we highly recommend using after market cooling systems, and keeping your Xbox outside of the entertainment center, so it can properly ventilate. Heat causes damage to the motherboard, GPU, cold solder joints, the DVD drive, etc. If you are experiencing trouble with your Xbox, we have compiled a list of troubleshooting tips as well as error code explanations to help you troubleshoot your console.

Hardware Failure - Bottom Right Quadrant is Red
A hardware issue has been detected with your console. This can mean anything, but if it's followed with a message on your TV screen, consider it to be a good sign. Most of these can be repaired. Think of these as your car starts, but it doesn;t go anywhere when you put it into drive.

E45 Code Displayed:
TSOP/Flash Memory Issue - Firmware related, failed update, or flash rom chip failed. Fue to the fact that the TSOP holds the secret keys to your DVD drive, repair is highly unlikely, even after the flash chips are replaced.

E64 Code Displayed:
Sata Interface Error, DVD Logic Board defective, DVD frimware corrupt (often from attempting to mod your drive). Repair may be possible. Try to unplug the unit for a few minutes if this error showed up at random. You may also have a defective DVD laser, failed gears or worn out worm gear that moves the laser back and forth.

E65 Code Displayed:
DVD specific. Drive failed to initialize. Firmware or hardware issue with the drive or Northbridge failure on the motherboard. Repair may be possible.

E66 Code Displayed: DVD Firmware is bad, security keys do not match, drive logic board failed. Repair may be possible.

E67 Code Displayed:  Possible hard drive failure or bad sectors on the drive. Remove the hard drive and try again. Make sure the hard drive connection is not loose.

E68 Code Displayed: Hard drive error, file structure corrupt ot bad connection. Also, firmware (dashboard) may be too old to recognize a higher capacity drive. Shut downn, reseat the drive, power cycle.

E69 Code Displayed: Hard drive communication error - SMART (hard drive is about to fail or hard drive circuitry is defective). Replace the hard drive or remove it and restart.

E71 Code Displayed: Firmware update went bad. Dashboard update failed. Can be recovered in most cases. Sometimes caused by southbridge failure and requires reflow.

E72 Code Displayed: Nand memory error. This could be caused by a bad update or defective flash chip. On rare occasions, south bridge failure. Also, ANA/HANA HDMI scaler failed.

E73 Code Displayed: Southbridge error, ethernet controller chip failed, or 65% chance of GPU failure. Reflow likely required.

E74 Code Displayed: Cold solder failure at GPU or HANA HDMI scaler chip 90% of the time. Reflow required. On rare occasions, switching to AV composite video cable will allow you to play games in low resolution. Also, try reseating AV cables, different AV cables and restart the system.

E75 Code Displayed: Southbridge or Ethernet controller failure. Likely reflow.

E76 Code Displayed: Ethernet chip failed. Replacement required. This is a rare error. Power down the unit and let it cool off before restarting.

E77 Code Displayed: Ethernet failure. System can not initiliaze the network interface. Replacement required

E78 Code Displayed: Jtagging your Xbox and screwing it up is bad. Not to mention illegal. AsiC Id Check Failed. TSOP reflash required.

E79 Code Displayed: Hard drive error, dash board error, power brick out of spec. Secondary error code can help determine the exact problem. Also, may be caused by Southbridge failure or 12 volt fan mod. Repair may be possible.

E80 Code Displayed: Error caused by Jtag and wrong frimware, does not match blown resistor pattern. Why Jtag and break the law when you can buy used games for half the price? Repair may be possible.

All EXX error codes are usually followed by a secondary code consiting by a certain amount of flashes which will help techs determine specific region of failure.

Hardware Failure - Q1, Q3 & Q4 Blinking Red

System can not initilize and can not boot the OS kernel. This is a severe failure of GPU, CPU, Southbridge, ANA Chip or other hardware malfunction.  Basically your car does not start. Engine or Transmission has failed. These errors can only be repaired at the lab, as troubleshooting these requires specialized equipment and in depth knoweledge of electronics.

System Overheating - Q1 & Q3 Flshing

This is a great error to see. Your system has been shut ddown to prevent overheating damage. Usually damage occurs over a long period of time, leading to complete failure. If you are seeing this error, it can be a sign of upcoming failure. Do not use the unit with this error. Clean out your unit, purchase an after market cooling system and do everything possible to increase ventilation. Taking it to the shop for preventative maintenance is highly recommeded at this point, to replace the dried out thermal compound, check the fans and tighten up the cooling system assembly. This will prevent failure and prolong life of your console.

Audio / Video Connection Bad

Your audio / video cable may be loose or defective. Reseat, replace and try again. If issue persists, GPU or HDMI scaler failure is suspected. Unit may require service.
